Mark 6: 50

50 They were all terrified when they saw him.

Jesus spoke to them at once, “Courage!” he said. “It is I. Don't be afraid!”

I am not the keenest flyer in the world! And yet my longest flight was one from London to Denver which lasted 10 hours! If holidays abroad are to be on the table then flying has to be endured. I have looked at various ways of coping with flying, from medicine to those training days organised by airlines to overcome fear of flying. 

Jesus and his disciples didn’t have to worry about this form of travel, though they did have some rocky times on the choppy waters of Galilee. When filled with fear, Jesus said to his followers, “Courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” It may seem too simple to some, but have you ever thought about taking Jesus at his word? For some reason, I could not get that phrase out of my head, so when I took a flight recently, I steadied myself by simply repeating to myself, “I will not be afraid.” I believe God’s spirit helped me directly. Don’t get me wrong, I was not sitting there without a care in the world, but I believe God helped to calm my fears. 

God is with us on our journeys wherever they may be. God is with us on our journey through life. Many times we are faced with fear in various circumstances of our everyday lives. It is then we remember that we are not alone, that Jesus stands by our side, and he gives us the courage and strength to see it through.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, stand with us in all your risen power. Help us to hold out our hand to grasp yours. Whatever fears and anxieties and worries come our way, help us not to be afraid, but to have courage and to trust in you, for you hold us in your care on all our journeys, including that final journey home to you in heaven. Amen.
