Luke 1: 46-51 (NRSVA)

46 And Mary said,

‘My soul magnifies the Lord,

47

    and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,

48

for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.
    Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;

49

for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
    and holy is his name.

50

His mercy is for those who fear him
    from generation to generation.

51

He has shown strength with his arm;
    he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.

“My soul glorifies the Lord…”

I cannot count the many times as a choir singer I have sung the words to all manner of harmonies, arrangements and beautiful interpretations.

I have been blessed way beyond what I ever deserved, to have been part of moments where the church filled with the spiralling music which went on forever and ever.

And yet. I come back to Mary. Poor, not particularly special, saying these words.

Let’s make it a blues tune…

“Man, I done been chosen, above anyone else – Lord how come – to be the woman who done bear your son

Man this thing done show God’s mercy and his grace, to all who gone before and will go after – cause this be his will

He will show mercy, he will rescue the poor and the disheartened

the mighty, why they don’t matter not a hill of beans

Because my Lord and your Lord will rescue us all

and you’d best not forget

Cause my Lord and your Lord is a Lord of love – and don’t have no truck with them evil men who think they rule the world.”

Prayer:

Lord you done many things, I can’t count what y’all done for me.

Y’all mighty.

And I believe

Lord how I believe
