Parable of the Tenants in the Vineyard
You might say this parable could be called This parable can speak to us all on two levels. At face value it has something to say to those who think they have a divine right to inherit and occupy land and property regardless of the consequences of their actions. It reminds us all that the earth belongs to the Lord and the fulness thereof. We are all sojourners on this earth and we are responsible to God for the way we treat the land and the tenants who love in it. Interesting to open up a discussion on refugees, the growing issues of ethnic cleansing and the arrogant attachment humans have to believing land belongs to us one group over another.
Secondly the parable describes how easy it is for religious people to become so over familiar with God that they take the gifts of God for granted. In doing so they become arrogant and instead of fulfilling their calling and purpose they become self seeking.
We all need to guard against serving our own needs rather than that of God and others. This parable has much to say about the story of redemption and the identity of Jesus. It also challenges us to consider the our own rebellion against God. The Gospel invites us to repent lest we fall under the judgement of God.
The parable reminds us that God will reclaim his vineyard and bring about his Kingdom through the resurrection of Jesus.
