The Great Wide World Over There
by Ray Bradbury
This week in the Tales from The Library we will be reading 'The Great Wide World Over There' by Ray Bradbury.
The story follows Cora, who lives in a secluded valley with her husband Tom but longs to know of the world beyond. Her literate nephew is coming to visit for a month, and she intends to learn from him how to read and write so that she can use the wonderful postal system to get information from all around the world outside her valley. The story speaks of the need for human contact, the value of education, and the desire for information beyond our own personal scope of experience. If you read this story with the Internet in mind, rather than traditional snail-mail, it is still surprisingly relevant. A world of information at your fingertips, limited only by your own ability to access and understand it. It is something we take for granted. In a world where - now more than ever - people are dependent on contact and communication, this story seams even more relevant, where people’s mental health and happiness are dependant on the ability to communicate and use the modern technology.
This story featured in the book 'The Golden Apples of the Sun' by Ray Bradbury, there is also a TV episode of 'Ray Bradbury's Theatre' of this story; Ray Bradburys Theatre TV episode
