What does it take to distract a man from being late for the interview of his life? Something evil. This week in the book club we will be reading 'That Bus is Another World' by Stephen King.
A man on his way to a potentially career-changing appointment witnesses something that causes a moral dilemma. Should he report what he's seen and risk missing his appointment or ignore it?
'That Bus Is Another World' is a horror short story written by Stephen King and first published in the August 2014 edition of Esquire. It was later collected in his 2015 short story collection The Bazaar of Bad Dreams. The story was inspired to Stephen King by the traffic in Paris.
This story raises some moral questions, what is the right thing to do at any point? Should one always report a crime? Can we reason ourselves into a position of moral and emotional detachment and ambivalence? Have you rationalised a situation to the point of detachment? and how easy and common is it for us to do this as a people? Is it best sometimes not to think about it, and not to know...
"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age." H.P. Lovecraft
