Matthew 13: 18-23 (NRSVA)

18 ‘Hear then the parable of the sower. 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. 20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. 22 As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing. 23 But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.’

There has been a lot of scholarly research carried out into the way Jesus used parables. Most agree that Jesus was following the Hebrew rabbinic tradition of telling parables, while adding his own unique insight in order to catch his hearers' attention. He would hold up a truth or an evil expecting it to act as a mirror confronting the listener with the character and meaning of the Kingdom of God.

He often told the story in such away that people would place themselves in the story. But sometimes it would appear his intention was to reveal the secrets of the Kingdom to his disciples. (Mark 4: 11-12.) In other words he knew some people were not ready to receive his teaching. However I think the door is always left open for those who doubt. Perhaps at another time and place on hearing again they might well receive his word. Are we not all glad that we’ve been given second chances?

PRAYER:

Lord,

Give me the insight to know

When to speak plainly

And when to choose my words carefully

Some of my friends are ready to hear, receive and learn

While others are caught up in the business of life

Give me the patience and understanding

To choose the right moment

In order that eyes might be opened

To receive your coming Kingdom.
