Galatians 6: 15-16 (NRSVA)

15 For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is anything; but a new creation is everything! 16 As for those who will follow this rule—peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

Yesterday, we made reference to the old classic but still much-loved hymn, ‘When I survey the wondrous cross’. It’s unlikely that Dave Bilbrough’s ‘I am a new creation' will still be being sung in centuries to come but, that said, it contains important scriptural truths within it nonetheless.

“I Am a New Creation,
No more in Condemnation,
Here in the Grace of God, I stand.

My Heart is Overflowing,
My Love just keeps on Growing,
Here in the Grace of God, I stand.”

In Galatians, Paul continues his insistence that the Mosaic laws, the old Jewish customs are no longer important. Having said that his only boast is in the cross of Christ, he goes on to say that all that matters is the new creation. Bilbrough’s song rejoices in that.

If we’ve been fortunate enough, we’ll have seen examples of men and women who before our eyes have become new creations. Speaking for myself, I’ve seen it often enough in the sphere of recovery from drug addiction, through the ministry that I’ve been involved in. What a privilege to see one born again; to see one coming from death to life; to see someone becoming a new creation in Christ.

Though not necessarily as dramatic, the truth is that for all those who find themselves believing in Jesus and following after him, there is newness of life. Whether we’d have used such language or not, we all become new creations. The old has gone, the new has come.

But the New Testament goes even further. God’s plan is that the whole of creation will be made new. And within that we shall be more than conquerors.

Prayer:

Creator God, you spoke and by your word all things were created. Speak again, Lord, that all things shall be made new. Through Christ our Lord, AMEN.
