How can we be sure
Listen to this daily worship
Luke 1: 18 (NRSVA)
18 Zechariah said to the angel, ‘How will I know that this is so? For I am an old man, and my wife is getting on in years.’
I’m never quite sure how to read this verse. But I think it would be true to say that Zechariah has moved on from his disappointment regarding having a son, to thinking, “Is this not too good to be true? ” When God has put some amazing possibilities in our heads and our hands, how often do we say, “How can this be?” These verses remind me that God is the God of big projects as much as the God of small everyday issues. God as we will see in chapter two is the God of the impossible.
Let’s be careful never to undermine the hand of God at work in our lives and the lives of others. Let’s be careful that we don’t dismiss God’s angels, his messengers of good news. God hears our prayers and we should not be surprised when he brings about outcomes in our lives that are totally unexpected, unrealistic and unchangeable. Perhaps the message is, “It’s time to get with God’s programme — it will happen with or with you.” It’s time to believe the angels. (With or with you is intentional…)
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus,
Today I’m stepping out in faith
I’m believing the angels
Believing you want the best for me
Believing the best of my dreams
Rejecting the worst of my nightmares
Lord Jesus,
Today I’m stopping asking how all this will happen
Instead I’m believing the why this will happen
Believing it is your love that surrounds my life
Receiving the joy in preparing for an amazing Christmas
Lord Jesus
Today I’m bringing each member of my family to you
For an Advent blessing
Naming them before you
Believing you want the best for them
Light a candle of hope in each of their hearts
