From Dust to Clay
James 1:2-4
Trials and Temptations
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
On Ash Wednesday, we began our Lenten and Easter theme #URMoreThanDust. It explored how the tiny particles of what we are, all the molecules and cells (and intangible things like memories and hopes), come together to make something more than the sum of our parts. In May, along with the wider Church of Scotland, we unpacked the phrase ‘Word of Life’, and considered how the Word can enliven dry dust.
Now, on the precipice of Pentecost, we see how dust, given breath by the Word of Life, can become clay, able to withstand fire and testing, moulding and shaping as we are Swept Away into something new. Follow the rest of the prayers in June to see how our writers develop this concept, and see where we are swept away to…
Dear God,
Trials,
testing,
perseverance,
and other daunting things,
lie before us,
but so do you.
You are beside us,
alongside us,
you have our back,
and are scouting the way ahead.
Thank you.
Amen.
