Five Ways To Rep For Jesus
Listen to this daily worship
Philippians 2: 19 (NRSVA)
19 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I may be cheered by news of you.
In the New Testament Paul sees Timothy as a trusted messenger and representative who could carry important news. As disciples of Jesus we are not lone agents who only represent ourselves — we are ambassadors for Christ!
Timothy was good at repping for Paul, but more importantly, he was good at repping for Jesus. How could we rep for Jesus this week? Here are some ideas below to get the ball rolling.
- Smiling. Being a disciple of Christ is living life to the full across the full gamut of emotions. There’s no need to be happy clappy grinners 24/7. But there are times when the most powerful tool of grace we can use is a network of muscles in the lower half of our face.
- Really listening. Jesus spent thirty years listening to humanity and three years speaking. As disciples we’re often encouraged to say things to the world, but what are we meant to be listening to?
- Joining the dots. Often reflecting Christ and being a compassionate and caring person isn’t about the big gestures and dramatic sacrifices, but the little actions that join the dots. Being kind and paying attention. Person A mentioned X in passing so maybe I could do Y, I will see what B and C think and factor in when Z happens. Sounds a bit like an equation that doesn’t it? But equations can be powerful emotional tools. I knew a man who instead of celebrating traditional anniversaries with his wife (5 year/10 year etc) would instead surprise her with things things like 3,000 days, or 100,000 hours. She delighted in these unexpected surprises. And how were these romantic gestures powered? Spreadsheets! We all have our own way of joining the dots.
- Following your passion. Jesus isn’t calling you to be somebody else, he’s got somebody else for that, Jesus is calling you to be you.
- Standing with others. Jesus cared deeply about people that others would ignore, belittle or dismiss. So remember the power of a smile, listen, join the dots, follow your passion, and side with those who need you.
Prayer:
Lord in Heaven,
Out of your generosity
inspire us to reflect you
and rep you
every day.
Amen.
