Romans 16: 2 (NRSVA)

2 I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.

Paul is sharing his own story, his own relationship with Phoebe. She has been a great help to Paul, he has seen firsthand the qualities that make her a deacon in the church. He has seen firsthand how she shines bright for the Lord. People will take seriously what Paul has to say about Phoebe.

Our stories, our testimonies, have power. By making ourselves vulnerable and sharing them we can and will bring people to our Lord God. Our stories of the Lord working in our lives are a personal invitation. People can say ‘Well If God brought healing/transformation to their life/situation, then maybe he can bring the same to mine!’

And age and experience are no barrier. When I was training I got to know a wonderful sister in Christ who had been a faithful servant to the church all her days. She is now very elderly and lives in a care home. This modern day Phoebe shines brightly and actively shares her stories, encouraging the other residents to watch the weekly live streaming of the church service with her, to pray and read their Bibles together. She is a wonderful example of discipleship.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit

Give me the courage of Paul to actively share my story, of my relationship with the Lord and how he has been working in my life.

Amen
