Luke 4: 42-44 (NRSVA)

42 At daybreak he departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowds were looking for him; and when they reached him, they wanted to prevent him from leaving them. 43 But he said to them, ‘I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose.’ 44 So he continued proclaiming the message in the synagogues of Judea.

Do we sometimes, ourselves, nervously come over to Jesus with a tablet and a schedule, tapping him on the shoulder.

“Eh Jesus? Yeah thanks.

Yeah, we need you to come quick. You’re our keynote speaker. Everyone is in their seats and ready for you.

Yeah they’re all sitting. Just waiting for you to speak.

What? No, they’re not doing anything, they’re just waiting. For you.

We’re all waiting, I don’t mean to rush you…

Uh huh, yeah.

It’s just, yeah, you’re the keynote you know.

Uh huh. Like I say we don’t want to rush you, but we do have tea and coffees booked for half past so…

Hmmm, yeah.

We did put it in the programme: ‘Jesus speaks’. So we’re all kinda looking forward to it.

Uh huh, hang on… But we had you booked up didn’t we? Our people spoke to your people. It was all set up.

But where?

You can’t go.We have got you on the schedule, people are expecting you. People are waiting. They’re all sitting waiting for you. We put chairs out and everything.

Uh huh.

Come with you? Us? Now?

But I mean, there’s the tea and coffees, at half past, like I say, yeah we put out the tables…

Uh huh.

Well I mean if you have go, you have to go Jesus, we’ll just eh, wait for when you’re next passing through I suppose?”

Prayer:

Lord God sometimes we forget that your Kingdom is ‘share size’…

Sometimes we prefer to sit around and wait for you to turn up,

forgetting that you turned up the instant you were needed

and you’re actually waiting for us to show up.

Amen.
