Chocolat - Lenten Study Series
Starting at 2pm 02.03.20
As Part of The Virtual Coffee Shop we are launching a new Lenten series, where people can log in and connect together online just like you would at your local church and in Bible study groups. Join us on this Lenten Series led by Robin Hill, based upon the film 'Chocolat'.
If you haven't seen the film, nows the time to do so! We will be covering and showing the film in sections as part of this series, but to get the full experience, we would advise you watch it in full before the study groups begin.
Chocolat tells the story of Vianne Rocher, played by Juliette Binoche, who arrives in the French village of Lansquenet-sous-Tannes at the beginning of Lent with her six-year-old daughter, Anouk. She opens a small chocolaterie. Soon, she and her chocolate influence the lives of the townspeople of this fictional, repressed French village in very different and interesting ways.
The purpose of this course would be to provide participants with the ability to engage over five afternoons in a moderated Lenten reflection time.
Longniddry Parish Church has run an annual film-based Lent course each year since 2015. The chosen films in previous years have been “Casablanca”, “The Way”, “The King’s Speech”, “I, Daniel Blake”, “The Greatest Showman” and this year's film is “Chocolat”.
We will be working with excellent study guides for these movies, principally by the writer Hilary Brand, who has a real gift for looking at a secular narrative and extracting spiritual questions and issues from it.
Her slim book, “Christ and the Chocolaterie: A Lent Course” is very thought-provoking and straightforward to use and would be a great resource for these groups. However, the material will be covered in the groups should you not manage to purchase the book beforehand.
Each session runs from 2pm to 3.30pm
Session 1: Thursday 2nd
Session 2: Friday 3rd
Session 3: Tuesday 7th
Session 4: Wednesday 8th
Session 5: Thursday 9th
