Worth it
Ezekiel 18:1-4
The one who sins will die
18 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 ‘What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel:
‘“The parents eat sour grapes,
and the children’s teeth are set on edge”?3 ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel. 4 For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child – both alike belong to me. The one who sins is the one who will die.
What fun to celebrate the birth of Jesus,
cosy among the animals and angels,
adored by rough shepherds and exotic visitors,
the apple of his parents’ eye - and ours!
Can this really be the judge of all the earth,
the promised saviour?
What will he have to say about the way we love our own children?
How will we account for the thousands who wander our streets?
And who provoked those tortured souls to hate their classmates and teachers,
so much as to take their lives
even before their own got started?
Into this tragic world you sent your son,
because we are worth it?
Who calls us now to follow him,
because he is worth it.
