With the comfort we have been given
2 Cor 1:3-4
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
God of all comfort,
May we be comforters still,
For the child who only knows
The empty chair where her mother used to sit,
The unworn shoes at the back door,
The sound of her father crying at night,
May we be comforters still.
For the daughter whose daily task
Is to speak love to a mother
Who is vanishing, being rubbed out
By dementia, unrecognising,
May we be comforters still.
For the man whose limbs
Have to fight a long haul against gravity,
For whom the rushing world
Will not slow down,
May we be comforters still.
God of all comfort,
For those you give to us
Who are suffering loss,
May we be kind eyes, long listening,
Loving laughter, patient hands.
May we be comforters still.
