Who is God?
Listen to this daily worship
Isaiah 40: 27-31 (NRSVA)
27
Why do you say, O Jacob,
and speak, O Israel,
‘My way is hidden from the Lord,
and my right is disregarded by my God’?28
Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.29
He gives power to the faint,
and strengthens the powerless.30
Even youths will faint and be weary,
and the young will fall exhausted;31
but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.
There is a deep correlation between faith, hope, and love. It is implied when we say the first few words of the creed: “I believe in God the Father Almighty”. To do so, is to speak of a relational God who exists in a loving communion. (I’ll talk more about what I mean by this later in the week), but to add Almighty is to describe his omnipotence. To say them together is to take us beyond human understanding to the place of faith, hope, and boundless loving possibilities. It is not that we leap up to God, we don’t have that capacity. It is that God comes down to our level and leaps with us.
In the passage for today, in Isaiah 40, we can see that connection if we look closely. Implicit in the whole chapter is the gracious tender love of God for all his creation speaking to you and to me. It is knowledge of this love that fills us with faith and hope. The chapter starts with the wonderful reassuring words of God’s love and concern. ‘Comfort my people‘ and it ends with his people ‘soaring like eagles.’ God lifting us up. Leaping as it were with us.
Prayer:
Thank you Father God
for placing me in
this beautiful world
Spinning round in time and space
Creating for us
Wonder filled moments
of faith, hope, and love
Establishing goodness as
your default position
Lift me by your Spirit
from my moments of doubt filled weariness
Into a new found confidence
Let me soar like an eagle
High above my anxious thoughts
Returning to rest safe in your presence
Comforted by your Spirit wings.
