Psalm 119: 97–104 (NRSVA)

97 Oh, how I love your law!
It is my meditation all day long.
98 Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies,
for it is always with me.
99 I have more understanding than all my teachers,
for your decrees are my meditation.
100 I understand more than the aged,
    for I keep your precepts.
101 I hold back my feet from every evil way,
in order to keep your word.
102 I do not turn away from your ordinances,
    for you have taught me.
103 How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 Through your precepts I get understanding;
therefore I hate every false way.

“In 100 yards, turn right at the next junction”. The insistent voice commands our attention and expects our obedience. When we turn left, “Recalculating route, at the next roundabout, go right round and turn where I first told you!” We diminish our growing relationship with our Father when we hear his word as though it were our sat–nav.

PRAYER:

Ever speaking God; never silent God,

Won’t you give me just five minutes peace?

Incessant commandments, do this, do that…

Inescapable lessons, and there is homework for the weekend.

Forgive me for abusing your word,

When I hear it as though depersonalised,

When I use it to browbeat others,

For the many ways I turn aside from your word.

As I mediate may your word encircle me,

Whichever way I go I will bump into your testimonies.

As I submit to your commandments,

I will encounter your generous promises.

When I am informed by your precepts,

I will flourish in your law.

Guide by the joy of your rules,

I will embrace the tenderness of your statutes.

Let your word resound in my ears,

May it take root in my heart,

    May it transform my life.

Surprise me with those lessons you taught me long ago,

Bring them fresh to my mind when I need them today.

Fill me anew with the Pentecostal gift of the Speaking Spirit.

May his voice be a symphony of delight to me.

All your word, your law and promises,

Sung by the Spirit as amazing grace.

Hold me before you until your word transforms me.
