Watering the garden
Listen to this daily worship
Jeremiah 31: 12 (NRSVA)
12 They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion,
and they shall be radiant over the goodness of the Lord,
over the grain, the wine, and the oil,
and over the young of the flock and the herd;
their life shall become like a watered garden,
and they shall never languish again.
When these verses were written I don't imagine that they could foresee me reading them in Glasgow where an unwatered garden is not often a problem. Therefore as I read them, I try to imagine the height of summer or at least a dry spell. When I do this the idea of a fully watered garden is much stronger.
To have a life like a watered garden, enriched and enlivened, sounds fantastic to me. It makes me wonder what I can do now, and in the future that is coming, to water the garden around me and within me. I suppose I will have to find a well or spring from which to draw this water. Perhaps a well filled with desire for change, perhaps a spring of creativity under pressure. Wherever I get this water from, I know for it to enrich the gardens around me it must also be drawn from God because water without the addition of living water runs the risk of drying up once again.
PRAYER:
Wellspring God,
Enrich our lives and enliven our souls
Help us to find our wells and our springs on which to draw
Generously grant us your living water
Send us on your mission, teach us to garden your way.
Amen.
