Galatians 5: 24-26 (NIVUK)

24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

My grandson Alfie thinks I am his and when we spend time together he wants to be the full focus of my attention. He gets jealous when others want to talk to me and spend time with me including his sister, family and my church! The other week I was talking to my son (his Dad) on the phone. I finished by saying, ‘See you later, I love you, my prince.’ Alfie was so cross and jealous. He said ‘I thought I was your prince.’ I said, ‘Yes you are. You are my wee prince and your Dad is my big prince!’

Sometimes in church we can be jealous and envy one another. We can think that someone is getting more opportunities than we are, someone’s gifts are more valued than ours, someone is more alive in the Spirit than we are, that they sense God more than we can. The list could go on and on!

But we don’t need to be jealous or envy each other. For we all have our own unique relationship with God, we all have our own unique God given gifts. Things happen in God’s timing and season. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ in unity. We all need each other in community to build God’s Kingdom here on earth. Let us walk closely with the Holy Spirit, following where the Spirit leads us.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit

Keep us from envy.

Help us to be happy with our brothers and sisters in their joys.

Keep us humble and free from conceit

Knowing that all our gifts and opportunities come from our Lord God.

Amen
