Turning point: between breaths
Listen to this daily worship
Matthew 4: 11 (NRSVA)
11 Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.
It seems time hangs suspended
Between the taking in and letting go
The listening and the pouring out
There is a pause, a rest
Equilibrium of sorts
As the forward movement seems to carry
Coasting through the water
Breath-less
And still
Selah
Mid-swim, mid-rhythm, at precisely the point where sufficient air fills the lungs and there is no need yet to exhale, comes a moment of rest if we will notice it. Held and carried on through the water. In prayer it often comes without words: a warmth, an inner joy, a sense of weightlessness. God is close.
Angels came and attended Him; God ministers to us at the heart of prayer often so beautifully that it takes our breath away.
Prayer:
Father God
Today I pause in Your presence. Jacob wrestled in prayer, and sometimes I know the feeling. Prayer can take me from one breath-taking place to the next. But today, I simply lean back, thankful, and rest as You carry me on. Amen
