Toy Story Trinity
Listen to this daily worship
Jeremiah 29: 4-7 (NRSVA)
4 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6 Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. 7 But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
‘May our life together reflect the dance of the Trinity by which the world is blessed.’ (Welcome Service - Iona Community)
At Scargill House in May, event participants were exploring the subject of ‘The Trinity’ through scriptures, thoughts and quotations. All trying to catch glimpses from different angles about this beautiful, amazing and head-scratching reality of us being caught up in the life of the Trinity — Father, Son and Spirit.
That same week, the resident community were preparing for a Half Term event based on Pixar’s ‘Toy Story’ films. I was in charge of assembling a suitable mural of the main characters (Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jess) bursting forth into the room and running towards an adventure. On Tuesday evening a mixed group of Community gathered to tackle the project, from different backgrounds and with different skills. Each person chose which part they wanted to do. One projected the image onto the wall, another couple put up the blue background paper and cut out white clouds, several of us drew round the projected image and then started to paint it in in sections. Through each layer of paint and added detail, we completed the transfer of the image onto the wall.
The group painting different parts of the mural mirrored what had happened earlier in the day through the event discussion session: each person’s contribution highlighted different bits of what we saw as the Trinity — whether speaking theologically, or about a coloured shape on the painting of Toy Story characters.
PRAYER:
Projected into the world with strength,
Engaging with Power, with Beauty, Movement.
Trinity.
Can we see?
Can we attend to the small part revealed in love?
Its vibrant colour, glimpsed in the silent sight of focused gaze.
One moment glimpsed and, pencil drawn in hand,
We try to draw around the space it occupies.
Try to capture the sense of form,
Wanting to talk of its beauty,
Remember its bright gift.
When we see, when we take into ourselves its shining,
It lightens our soul, sparks our present,
Charges us with a burst of life.
Though uncaptureable the whole,
Cherish that fragment,
And Shine.
