The uncomfortable truth
Psalm 137: 8-9
Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction,
happy is the one who repays you
according to what you have done to us.
Happy is the one who seizes your infants
and dashes them against the rocks.
As Paris writhes in the raw grief of her broken heart
we are left with the uncomfortable truth
that nowhere is safe, let alone sacred.
Imagined fear, alongside the all-too-real pain
of those who already suffer.
You, who were there as the bombs exploded,
who felt every bullet as it tore
into bars and cafes, a stadium and a bar.
How are we to be faithful in the wake of it all?
Is it our prayers, for victims and perpetrators :
to break the cycle of violence?
Is it our readiness to help clean up:
shattered lives and mangled property?
Maybe it’s in our shared resolve to remain uncorrupted
but surely not insensitive?
May the Holy Spirit lead us into all truth…
