Colossians 3:23-24

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Have you ever noticed when watching a sprinter before a race, or a footballer after a goal, or tennis player after a winning shot, that they sometimes make a sign of a cross or point to the sky?

We may wonder what the significance of this is and if they are committing the win into God’s hands.

It may surprise us to know that there are large numbers of Christians in sport today, competing at all levels and in all areas.

At the Olympics last week we saw the sport of Rugby Sevens make its debut and, in the same spirit, we saw Fiji win it’s first ever medal- let alone gold! Straight after the win the team were caught on camera in a huddle, singing hymns and in a group prayer.

In the US, there is a famous American Football player, Tim Tebow, who is known for bending on one knee to pray before every game- a stance which was also named after him.

Faith can play a large part in many athletes lives and the act of giving God the glory can release them from the burden of simply winning and allow them to enjoy the talents and skills that he has given them.

Lord it is a joy to see athletes from around the world come together
We thank you that they are not afraid to show the world their faith when they play or compete
May we follow suit and put every activity in our lives into your hands
to take pleasure in all that we do, as you take pleasure in us.
We lift our hands to you in praise and thanksgiving
as we run the race of life
and whether we win or lose we have
an unwavering peace, knowing that
the victory is ours in Christ Jesus.

Amen.
