The Mustard Seed

Matthew 13:31-32

31 He told them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field.32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.’

This week we are thinking about the Parable of the Mustard Seed found in Matthew:13:31-32

The Parable of the Mustard seed appears in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke and in all three it represents the Kingdom of God or Heaven.
But why the Mustard seed? Matthew tells us it is the
‘Smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.’
The smallest of all seeds.
And yet it grows into something so big that others can find a home in its branches.
Something so small, so insignificant – yet life giving and life changing.
The Kingdom of God.
The Kingdom of God has already come. It has arrived. But where do we see the seeds of it breaking through in our everyday lives?
This week, I encourage you to share the #smallthings – the mustard seed moments where you see God’s kingdom at work in your life.

Lord,

Sower of seeds,
Gardener of life,
Open our eyes to the seeds of your Kingdom in our midst,
To your action in our lives,
In our homes,
In our work places,
In our communities.
And once you’ve opened our eyes to the wonder of it,
Encourage and enable us to join in, to get involved and to sow more small seeds, or to tend the ones already breaking through,
So that your kingdom might grow on earth as in heaven.
Amen
