Taking a pattern
Listen to this daily worship
Romans 16: 1-2 (NRSVA)
1 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church at Cenchreae, 2 so that you may welcome her in the Lord as is fitting for the saints, and help her in whatever she may require from you, for she has been a benefactor of many and of myself as well.
Who is your pattern based on?
I think being taught is a bit like being handed a well worn sewing pattern. Some lines are already cut and brook no argument while others are faded and can be easily adjusted to fit your own shape.
In this snippet of a life we learn about Phoebe, a deacon who has been taught by, and earned the trust of Paul and many other leaders and teachers. She has been serving a church and is now travelling to another. We are assured, as the readers of this letter were, that she is to be trusted, welcomed, given all she needs to do her work for God.
Would anyone say that about you do you think?
Today as you go about your day, notice whose patterns you are following. Family habits, friends advice, work requirements, new patterns still being drawn up.
As you go and as you notice, offer up a prayer.
PRAYER:
Dear God of patterns
Help us to live our lives by your patterns
Guide us to good changes when we notice patterns we do not like
Open our eyes to patterns we have drawn and can be proud of
Give us humility and gentleness as we see where our patterns have been passed on in turn
Amen
