Striving to love
John 3:16-17
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
“Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
God, it was not out of justice that you gave us Jesus but out of love. And still, you continue to give us every day so much more than we deserve. Give us one more thing, we pray - the gift of grace - so that we might extend that same generosity of spirit to others, refusing to judge, striving to love. Enable us to see through the roughest exterior, not to be put off but to keep on dredging until we glimpse the gold that you discern in each of us. May the knowledge that we are loved free us up to love others and liberate us from our instinct to compete and trample others underfoot. You know us well. You know the battles that rage within us. Rescue us from ourselves and keep your love before us that we might model that love in all our actions awakening the spirit of your justice in ourselves and in others.
