Philippians 3: 13-14 (NRSVA)
13 Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on towards the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.
Sport is at the forefront of many people’s minds right now with the Commonwealth Games and England’s recently victory in the Euros. As we salute sporting excellence we also take an opportunity to thank you God for all of the enthusiastic souls using sport and activity, fitness and all kinds of games to encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to live well.
Sports so often draw the best from us and draw us into common purpose with others, part of a larger narrative where we can act out the metaphor of working and sharing together.
PRAYER:
Dear God
We press on with all who press on with us
we’re a big team
an unbeatable roster
a who’s who of talent.
We’re ready for fun
to expand
to learn
to grow.
We are grateful for all the coaches and mentors
across all walks and runs and jumps of life
who instil in us the drive
the focus
the enjoyment
of being alive.
Amen.
