Solas
Matthew 5:16
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
Heavenly Father,
You know that when we chose Solas, Gaelic for “light”, as the name for a new arts festival five years ago, we all had different reasons for agreeing to the name.
Some thought it appropriate because it was a midsummer festival,
others because Jesus described himself as the “Light of the World”,
others because it would spotlight the arts,
others thought the Gaelic word would emphasise its Scottishness,
while others dreamed dreams of helping to create a new Scottish Enlightenment.
Lord we want to thank you for the impact of that annual festival:
for the chance to live in an all-age community for a weekend
for being exposed to beliefs and ideas which take us out of our comfort zones
for marvelling at forms of creativity we would never encounter in daily life
for being participants rather than spectators
for friendships made and renewed
for experiencing different ways of worshipping
for the joy of experiencing your creation at closer quarters
and for that sense of celebration of the arts which permeates the whole event.
The Solas Festival – like the light – is still there, and we pray that it may continue to brighten our lives, enlighten our minds, and reveal something of your divine light both to us and in us.
Amen
