A prayer for visiting someone with a newborn baby
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 131 (NRSVA)
1 O Lord, my heart is not lifted up,
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvellous for me.
2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
my soul is like the weaned child that is with me.3 O Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time on and for evermore.
As any frazzled parent can tell you, life with a newborn isn’t generally a haven of calm and quiet. And yet there are moments — wonderful, heart swelling moments — when stomachs are full and bottoms are comfortable, and in the slow blinking quiet gaze of the very young there is indeed a perfect reflection of trust.
Whenever we visit a newborn child and welcome them to the world we can pray that the family might know some of that wonder and peace.
PRAYER:
Hospitable God
As I go to meet this new person, newly born into the world
May I go with open arms and a welcoming heart
Ready to share their parents’ wonder
Ready to offer whatever support is needed,
knowing these first days can be both extraordinary and exhausting.
May we all appreciate the gift of life as it is, right in this moment
and may we, as a community, surround that new life with love.
Amen
