A prayer for blessing a house
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 121 (NRSVA)
1 I lift up my eyes to the hills—
from where will my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.3 He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 He who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.5 The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.7 The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
8 The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time on and for evermore.
We should note from this psalm that it is not the bricks and mortar that contain the blessing. We carry the blessing within ourselves. As we cross the threshold of our homes we carry the blessing of God upon our lives into the world around us. We bring the blessing into the supermarket and into the workplace, into the sports arena and the hairdressers’. Wherever we go we cannot be diminished because he has promised that he will preserve us. In other words, he will keep our identities safe. It is not our surroundings that give us courage and strength to be. It is the blessing of God that rests upon us, preserving our going out and our coming in. So when you turn the key and cross the threshold into a familiar place that feels so lonely, remember you bring the blessing that turns loneliness into a home.
PRAYER:
Lord,
I offer to you our home
May all who cross the threshold be blessed
May strangers become friends
Embraced with love and acceptance
Even when I myself have become the stranger
Let the blessings within be aroused
Like one entering a colony of heaven
Rearrange the furniture of my life
Make my heart more outgoing
My ears more attentive
My mind more thoughtful
My hands more willing to serve
Open my eyes to see beyond the hills
To encounter your eternal love
A love that is shaping the world around me
Let me be part of that shaped love
Touching those who feel forgotten
Embracing those who feel unloved
And when I turn to go home
Make me aware of the blessing
When I turn the key
To go out or come in
May I be ever thankful
That you have promised to preserve my life.
