Play fair Wednesday
Listen to this daily worship
Micah 6: 8 (NRSVA)
8 He has told you, O mortal, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?
There is something quite simple and straightforward about today’s text. The prophet, in the verses that proceed, lists all the things that religion can demand of human beings in the name of God. Then he finally gives an irritated response to the man who is considering the evil practise of sacrificing a child to please God. To paraphrase the verse, he says stop all this nonsense! I’ve had enough! God has shown you what is required of you. It’s almost as though he has written it in the DNA of your heart. You know fine well — it’s simple:
‘Act justly
Love mercy
And walk humbly with your God’
And when we step out and stand up and attempt to live out these three attributes of godliness the Spirit of God draws near and walks with us.
PRAYER:
Lord,
Take my good intentions and turn them into actions that bring about justice
Take my deep emotions of love and mercy and turn them into acts of compassion
Take hold of my ego that I might walk the lest travelled road in your company
Time to Reflect:
Stop and think! In your desire for justice where does love and mercy meet with your passion for fair play?
