Once you have read it — pass it on!
Listen to this daily worship
Colossians 4: 16 (NRSVA)
16 And when this letter has been read among you, have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you read also the letter from Laodicea.
We take reading for granted these days, for sure. I love nothing better than turning all the super bright lights in the house out, lighting some candles, pegging my wee book light to the top of the latest novel and delving in.
There’s something otherworldly about it. There’s something I love even more than reading though: being read to. I love when the sound of the words enter your ears and you have the relaxation of allowing them to dance through your imagination. Time seems to slow down. It makes me think often about the way the letters of Paul were read. The church community was familiar, warm, unique… it wasn’t formal like today…it was largely house groups… and I imagine them sitting there in quiet intimacy with each other, hanging on the cadence of the speaker, being filled up with these powerful words of wisdom.
We’re to do the same, we’re to give these words away and allow them to enter the minds of others. So maybe today is the day for you? Grab your Bible, collect the wisdom, and go and pour it over someone like a warm hug. Offer to read scripture to someone, get it out there. It’s to be read everywhere, and to everyone!
Paul reminds us in today’s scripture that we are a community to give the words to one another. He calls for the church to read and pass on, because he knows in these words the faith of the church will grow. Please walk away from any notion scripture is for personal consumption all the time. It’s not. It strengthens you that you may give it away. So, let’s do it!
Prayer:
Lord fill me with your Word
pour into me your wisdom
alert me to the one, the two, the three… and more
that I’m to pass these words to this day
Let my heart be open to the opportunities
you are going to give me
Amen
