Not my will
Luke 22:39-46
Jesus left the city and went, as he usually did, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples went with him. When he arrived at the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." Then he went off from them about the distance of a stone's throw and knelt down and prayed. "Father," he said, "if you will, take this cup of suffering away from me. Not my will, however, but your will be done." An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. In great anguish he prayed even more fervently; his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. Rising from his prayer, he went back to the disciples and found them asleep, worn out by their grief. He said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you will not fall into temptation."
Loving God, the words that Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane astound us, 'Not my will but your will be done'. He knew the difficulties that lay ahead for him, and yet he still spoke the words. He knew he had to walk the road that led to the cross, and yet he still spoke those words. How can we praise you for such selfless love? Father, we confess that we don't find it easy to be selfless, to give up control, to make ourselves vulnerable. We don't find it easy to put ourselves into anyone else's hands - even yours. Help us to find the faith, the courage, the strength to say, 'not my will, but yours'. AMEN.
