Matthew 13: 31-32 (NRSVA)

31 He put before them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; 32 it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.’

I get a monthly vegetable seed box for myself and my grandson Alfie. Along with seeds the box comes with pots, compost and fun manuals on how to grow the seeds. It even has instructions on what tasty dishes we can make together once our vegetables are fully grown.

Alfie is so excited to open each of the seed bags as it fascinates him that all the seeds look different and come in a range of shapes and sizes. It is the smallest seeds that excite him the most. That from a tiny, tiny seed, a luscious plant can grow. A luscious plant that can produce vegetables that nourish us and help our bodies to grow.

Sometimes we think we are too small, too insignificant to do anything that will help grow God’s Kingdom here on earth. But with the right care and cultivation we can grow strong like the tiny mustard seed, bringing others into God’s Kingdom.

How do we do that? By reading our Bible, God’s own veg box and manual for living! And actively following the example of our Lord Jesus and nurturing the seeds he plants in our hearts.

Prayer:

Father God,

Nurture within us a desire to know you more and to seek and grow your Kingdom where you plant us.

Amen
