Moving mountains
Listen to this daily worship
Matthew 15: 22-28 (NIV)
22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”
23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”
24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”
25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.
26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.
Isn’t it wonderful to see how Jesus orchestrated a situation where he the teacher could learn a lesson from the Canaanite woman? What great faith she had! From addressing her first as a stranger, before long Jesus commended her as a woman whose faith was truly inspirational — challenging how the disciples saw her.
There can be no bigger barrier to cross than a mountain. There are times when the human barriers we put up become like that mountain. Then God sends someone who changes that perspective for us. God grant us the humility to learn from the simple faith of the most unexpected of people. Where there is estrangement, there is always hope, for faith can indeed move mountains and change hearts!
PRAYER:
Lord God, bring us together as one, for we are made in your likeness, we are forgiven through your Son, we are meant to be reconciled with you and with one another. May our new life in Jesus Christ bring us together as your body, your people, restored, healed, and sharing your love with others as you have called us to do. In Jesus Christ, let us be together as one. Amen.
