Magnificat!
Luke 1: 46-55
Mary's Song of Praise
46 Mary said,“My heart praises the Lord;
47 my soul is glad because of God my Savior,
48 for he has remembered me, his lowly servant!
From now on all people will call me happy,
49 because of the great things the Mighty God has done for me.
His name is holy;
50 from one generation to another
he shows mercy to those who honor him.
51 He has stretched out his mighty arm
and scattered the proud with all their plans.
52 He has brought down mighty kings from their thrones,
and lifted up the lowly.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things,
and sent the rich away with empty hands.
54 He has kept the promise he made to our ancestors,
and has come to the help of his servant Israel.
55 He has remembered to show mercy to Abraham
and to all his descendants forever!”
MAGNIFICAT they will call it,
my song of praise.
And be singing it still in two thousand years!
“Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord,
to children’s children and for evermore”.
Imagine!
Here’s me and Elizabeth
sharing our news,
comparing our bumps,
enjoying each other’s company,
talking nineteen to the dozen,
and her husband,
bless him,
cannot speak at all.
Everything in this family seems to be a bit out of the ordinary just now.
Zechariah has lost his voice,
and I have found mine.
Was I singing as I was doing my housework that day?
I don’t even remember.
But I am singing now.
In spite of my apprehension,
my puzzlement,
my astonishment,
I am singing.
God has done great things for my people in the past –
he is promising to do great things in time to come.
His son - my son - will change the world.
There is nothing that God cannot do!
So my heart praises the Lord;
my soul is glad because of God my Saviour.
How can I keep from singing?
