Living through disappointment
Listen to this daily worship
Luke 1: 5-7 (NRSVA)
5 In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly order of Abijah. His wife was a descendant of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 Both of them were righteous before God, living blamelessly according to all the commandments and regulations of the Lord. 7 But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were getting on in years.
There is a lot of information imparted in these two verses. Here is a couple living through disappointment yet, like Job, not allowing themselves to become bitter. They are living blameless lives. Yet the one thing they long for has never happened. It is clear that this passage teaches us that good people have to take their turn of living through the difficult times.
Nowhere in God’s salvation story are we promised that good things will always happen to good people. However we are assured that God promises to honour those who honour him. Let us take time today to honour God.
PRAYER:
Living God
You are my shield
My badge of honour
You are my defender and comforter
My shelter and refuge
In times of great disappointment
You have kept me from self pity and disbelief
You have stood behind me and before me
And walked by my side in the darkest of nights
You have kept me from falling
Your angels of mercy protect me
Secure in the light and tender compassion of your love
I bow in adoration
Your grace is all I need.
