Leaving the past behind
Listen to this daily worship
Exodus 2: 10 (NRSVA)
10 When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and she took him as her son. She named him Moses, ‘because’, she said, ‘I drew him out[b] of the water.’
Moses was drawn from water — his story an analogy of birth itself — coming through peril to be delivered by compassionate women into the world!
The Nile could have been the end of Moses’s story, but it was only the beginning, it was part of him, but it didn’t define or limit him.
How can Moses inspire us in our new lives with God to leave the past and the things that have limited us behind?
Prayer:
Lord you drew us from the water!
You drew us up, up, up and out of the water!
The Nile won’t hold us down
no, the Nile won’t hold us back.
The Nile won’t flood us out
no, the Nile won’t hold us back.
Swimming upstream against the current,
yes, the Nile won’t hold us back.
We’ll reach dry land on the other side
yes, the Nile won’t hold us back.
The water won’t dampen our spirits
no, the Nile won’t hold us back.
The water won’t get under our skin
no, the Nile won’t hold us back.
We’ll shake that water from our head
yes, the Nile won’t hold us back.
We’ll dry out now in the sweet sunshine
yes, the Nile won’t hold us back.
Thank you Lord for drawing us
up, up, up and out of the water.
Amen.
