John 13: 21-32 (NRSVA)

21 After saying this Jesus was troubled in spirit, and declared, ‘Very truly, I tell you, one of you will betray me.’ 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he was speaking. 23 One of his disciples—the one whom Jesus loved—was reclining next to him; 24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. 25 So while reclining next to Jesus, he asked him, ‘Lord, who is it?’ 26 Jesus answered, ‘It is the one to whom I give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.’ So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot. 27 After he received the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, ‘Do quickly what you are going to do.’ 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, because Judas had the common purse, Jesus was telling him, ‘Buy what we need for the festival’; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the piece of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, ‘Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32 If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once.

This week Laura has reflected on the themes that are in our daily scripture readings and linked them to key events during Holy Week in a series of seven monologues that invite us to see how this week resonates throughout scripture and into our lives today.

He could have stopped me. I’m not sure how he knows that the Jewish religious leaders had been in talks with me, but he knows. Maybe someone has told him. Anyway, he knows so I’m not really betraying him, am I? Not really?

I had believed he was the Messiah, I really had. I had told everyone I knew that he was the one we had been waiting for. He was the one who would overthrow the Romans and we would rule our own nation again. But I don’t know anymore. We don’t seem to be moving forward. He has performed so many miracles, I’ve seen them with my own eyes. So, I know he could overthrow the Romans easily, so why isn’t he? He talks about the Kingdom of God but that isn’t what I’ve signed up for. I still want to believe in him though…

He knows what I’m about to do. He even told me to go and do it. So maybe he is going to use what I’m about to do to his advantage. Maybe he has a plan after all. Maybe me doing this helps his plan. Maybe it isn’t really betrayal…

PRAYER:

Forgive us Lord that we find the ways of the world too easy, too distracting and too tempting.
Forgive the lies we tell ourselves.
Forgive us when we try and further our own agendas.
Forgive our weak faith and commitment
And help make us the true followers we long to be
Amen.

Lent Disciplines

Take a few minutes to be mindful of your breath, perhaps breathing slowly in and out. As you do consider the day ahead and think of all the places and situations your breath is going to take you today.
