Jesus does not set us up to fail
Listen to this daily worship
Luke 10: 1-2 (MSG)
1-2 Later the Master selected seventy and sent them ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he intended to go. He gave them this charge:
“What a huge harvest! And how few the harvest hands. So on your knees; ask the God of the Harvest to send harvest hands.
Jesus was sending the seventy ahead of him not so he could show up at a later date and outshine them. They were sent out because this is what Jesus had been training and equipping them for. He knew that they were capable and able because of how they responded to His strong love and leadership, teachings and actions.
Jesus tells them and us how it is, ‘What a huge harvest!’
He tells us what to do, ‘ask God to send harvesters’ and then sends out his disciples to be part of the answer to their prayers.
I love this passage, as it overflows with how Jesus empowers us to be all that He sees us to be. And it is so practical! We are reminded to see the world as God sees it which might jar with how we perceive it at times. This huge harvest is something we have to get out into. It is something we CAN get out and do.
Do we take His viewpoint or construct our own? Jesus does not set us up for failure, this is about His viewpoint.
Deep down we can wrestle with questions like ‘Do I have what it takes?’ or ‘Am I acceptable? In this passage, Jesus gives us a resounding, ‘You have what it takes! You are accepted and belong in My Kingdom!’ These and other scriptural truths God speaks over us are our baseline for living. Before we head out on a strenuous physical activity, race, match or otherwise, our bodies need warmed up. They need to be reminded of what they are designed to do with warm blood flowing to them and movement waking them up gently at first and then to the point they are bursting, ready to go. Holding the viewpoint of Jesus, reminding ourselves of it, is our warmup for partnering with Him in what He is doing today in this huge harvest.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank you that you do not set us up for failure but you set us up with a warm up which awakens every fibre of our being to your presence, your pace of movement. The posture we take today is to stand under your truths about us and this beautiful world.
There is a huge harvest. We are holy as you are holy. You have chosen us, saved us and prepared good works for us. You love us and have kindness for us this day.
Holy Spirit, remind us of even more powerful truths and warm us up in your presence as this is the place we live from.
Father all things are for your glory. Amen.
