Hungry
Matthew 5: 6-7
Matthew 5: 6 and 7
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
and from the Prophet Micah 6.8
You have already been told what is right.
and what the Lord desires of you.
Only this, to do what is right,
to love loyalty
and to walk humbly with your God.
Jesus said, “Blessed are those who hunger”
Have you ever been hungry?
Are you hungry today?
Bible begins and ends in gardens where we have clean water and good fruit.
However some types of hunger simply cannot be satisfied with food. We have physical and emotional hungers, but also a collective deep hunger for peace and justice. Jesus feeds 5,000 people who lack food, but he makes it abundantly clear in the beatitudes which we are studying this month that hunger for righteousness is really important to him. It is to me also, so one of Jesus most influential followers in the 1960's was Dr Martin Luther King and I am going to quote one his sayings before the prayers each day this week, his words still influence me.
Martin Luther King said, "Love is the most durable power in the world. This creative force, so beautifully exemplified in the life of Christ, is the most potent instrument available in humankind's quest for peace and security."
I invite you to pray Psalm 126 A Pilgrim Song ( The Message)
126 1-3 It seemed like a dream, too good to be true,
when God returned Zion’s exiles.
We laughed, we sang,
we couldn’t believe our good fortune.
We were the talk of the nations—
God was wonderful to them!”
God was wonderful to us;
we are one happy people.
4-6 And now, God, do it again—
bring rains to our drought-stricken lives
So those who planted their crops in despair
will shout hurrahs at the harvest,
So those who went off with heavy hearts
will come home laughing, with armloads of blessing.
