Romans 8: 18-25 (NIVUK)

18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.

22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

Are you uncomfortable today? What’s going on within? Are you weary? Tired? At the end of your tether? Has everything got heavier recently?

He commands you: Stop.
Come to me for a moment.
Put that down. Come sit here.
I want to talk to you.

The world around you is groaning. There is suffering everywhere.
We all await in eager expectation of the things to come.
Oh, that we yearn for true peace; a passing-understanding-peace
We want it more than anything, it’s all too much; too heavy.
Our bodies are even breaking as the years draw by, the yearning is inward
and yet outward. The lines of our faces show it. The waiting.

But that fire you felt long ago has not burned out.
There remains within you a flicker, a spark awaiting its blaze.
You were not made to be tinder-dry and heat devastated.
You were made to be a wick, on fire with the everlasting flame.
And this darkness will not overcome you, the light still shines.

Prayer:

Lord
In the despairing darkness
in the lucid hurt
let this wick be struck
let the heat rise
let the light shine.

Amen
