Good news. Great joy.
Psalm 98: 1-2
1 Sing to the Lord a new song,
for he has done marvellous things;
his right hand and his holy arm
have worked salvation for him.
2 The Lord has made his salvation known
and revealed his righteousness to the nations.
“Sing to the Lord a new song”. Thus begins Psalm 98, which is from start to finish a joyous anthem of praise to God - praise for the salvation the Lord has won for us. Everyone must take part. Whatever means are at our disposal - the harp, the trumpet, the horn, the voice - all are to be used in jubilation. But even that is not enough noise. In the beautiful poetry of the Psalm, the created world is invited to join in too, with the rush of the rivers, the roar of the seas, the echoes of the mountain tops.
And why all this excitement? Because the Psalm brings good news. The good news is that God is loving and kind, God is faithful and just, God brings salvation. God has done wonders. God remembers His people.
This Psalm is timeless, because every new generation of people experiences afresh God’s saving grace. The human race is on a continuing journey. There is always so much more to discover of God’s abundance. What better and proper response can there be than simple praise and adoration? “Sing to the Lord a new song”. Thanks be to God for His joy and His peace beyond measure.
