God stirs Joseph
Listen to this daily worship
Matthew 1: 20-21 (NRSVA)
20 But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’
Historically purple was the colour of wealth and royalty because of just how much it cost to create. These days we have many ways to make purple and as a result its meaning has begun to shift. Many people now see purple as a colour for those seeking spiritual insight and connection.
I wonder what Joseph was seeking when he entered into his dreams that night. Were Joseph’s dreams filled with purple? Was he wondering whether he had done the right thing by letting go of his attachment to Mary. Perhaps he was searching for God’s reassurance, affirmation or guidance.
What he found was compassion — as he is told not to be afraid.
What he found was reassurance —as the full truth is explained to him again.
What he found was urging — as he is called to play his part in a story bigger than himself.
In the end Joseph returned to Mary and took on the role of father on earth to Jesus.
In the end he went seeking his purpose and seeking a unique connection with God.
In the end Joseph became, in his own way, both royal and spiritual.
I think that, with a little persuasion, Joseph earned his purple in the end.
Prayer:
Dear God of connection
Thank you that you call us to be compassionate
Thank you that you remind us to seek you
Help us to protect those who are vulnerable
Task us with remembering what you have done and would do
Amen.
