God of the ages
Psalm 71:17-19
O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. So even to old age and grey hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to all the generations to come. Your power and your righteousness, O God, reach the high heavens. You who have done great things, O God, who is like you?
God of the ages,
The seconds tick by. The minutes pass to hours. The days dissolve and are reformed as years. And the years tick by like seconds.
As we look in the mirror, spotting another line, fearing the latest wrinkle, agonising over hairs that glint with a disturbing silver, help us to see a face which speaks not of age and agedness, but rather of continuing faithfulness and growing wisdom.
As life moves on through change and chance, help us to note our mistakes, to share our blessings and to seek your wisdom, so that we might learn – and then live to the full.
Through all the human frailties and failings which are ours, grant us continuing faith in your eternal nearness, so that our later years might know true fulfilment and joy in the Lord. AMEN.
