The giving of life
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 133 (NIV)
1 How good and pleasant it is
when God’s people live together in unity!2 It is like precious oil poured on the head,
running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
down on the collar of his robe.
3 It is as if the dew of Hermon
were falling on Mount Zion.
For there the Lord bestows his blessing,
even life forevermore.
The beautifully majestic snowcapped Mount Hermon, visible in the north of Palestine, is the source of the river Jordan. The melting snows sink deep into the mountain, forming subterranean waterways which burst out into gushing springs in the valley. It was at one of these springs, at Caesarea Philippi, that Peter first declared Jesus to be the Messiah, the Son of the living God.
This sacred spot, sparkling in the health-giving morning dew, the spot where a river with so many stories of hope and salvation begins, speaks to the author of this psalm of harmony, of the sheer delight which peace and unity brings.
What strength there is in the image of that mountain, and the blessing its springs bring to the valleys! What strength there is in the Lord who gives us life, faith, and love to move even the hardest of hearts, and bring God’s people together in unity.
PRAYER:
For the work of your creation, the beauty, the majesty, the perfect balance, the giving of life, we praise you O God. Lead us, we pray, to know the depths of the unifying message of Jesus, and to live a love that flows from you to heal and to set free. Amen.
