The First to Tell the Good News
Listen to this daily worship
John 20: 17-18 (NRSVA)
17 Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.”’ 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’; and she told them that he had said these things to her.
Something new and wonderful had happened. God was doing a new thing. God and mankind had been reconciled. Did Mary really grasp all this? The trouble is we today can tell the story like an historical tale. A faith story. But it’s not an historical event locked in history. It’s something that reaches outside of time itself. The death, resurrection and Spirit sending stories of Jesus are in fact one big event sealed with meaning in time but filled with eternal purpose beyond time. Mary made a start with the good news. She simply found Peter and said, “ the Lord has risen” and humanity’s future changed forever.
PRAYER:
Lord,
You said, “Go tell my brothers”
You entrusted the message to Mary.
Then to the whole church
You said, ”Go”
Give each of us the courage
To live out the truth in joyful hope
For there is no future for death
Love crucified has risen
Love betrayed has been reconciled
Love denied has been forgiven
Love embraced is the eternal song.
