Matthew 10: 26-31 (NLT)

26 “But don’t be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all. 27 What I tell you now in the darkness, shout abroad when daybreak comes. What I whisper in your ear, shout from the housetops for all to hear!

28 “Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. 30 And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.

Sparrows are fascinating. I watch them in the hedgerow outside my garden. I’ve heard them chirping happily in America and New Zealand. I’ve seen them hop about the streets of Jerusalem. It seems to be almost everywhere you go, the sparrow is there! And here we are again! We go to Matthew and the sparrows are even there! These little birds cross continents and generations and God the Father cares about them, they are valuable to Him. The Creator, who placed the speckled colours on the sparrow’s wings, such a small and seemingly insignificant bird, knows if one falls to the ground. And He is the one who laid the earth’s foundation and walked the recesses of the deep sea.

What a God!

This is the artist in whose hands we are in and we are more valuable to Him than the sparrows! Not one of us is in the background of God’s picture, we are all in the foreground and only He can do this.

How can we keep this immense news to ourselves? Who can you share it with today? Who do we know who could be encouraged knowing that they are more valuable to God than the sparrows He provides and cares for?

Prayer:

For our time of prayer today let’s take inspiration from Hip Hop artist and speaker Legin (Nigel spelt backwards because God turned his life around!) He says this in his piece, ‘God Is An Artist’:

“His thoughts are his paintbrush, existence his canvas. You’re his masterpiece. His will is why I am standing. His paint is his purpose and plan that he’s had since before we were here…”

Contemplate these words and reflect back to God in prayer what it means to you to be his masterpiece.
