Armoured lightly
Listen to this daily worship
Romans 13: 11-14 (NRSVA)
11 Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; 12 the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; 13 let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. 14 Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Good morning, I hope your morning has started well. Did you manage to find any time for yourself this morning? To breathe, to think? Did you perhaps have too much time and overthink?
I find mornings hard because I am a night owl in a world designed for morning larks. Also because I have a toddler who want to be active from the moment she gets up. I love that about her but it sometimes doesn’t leave much time for me to find my rhythm, my peace.
This passage from Romans 13 talks about waking and although it isn’t suggesting a healthy morning routine of breakfast and brushing teeth etc it can still offer us wisdom to try and incorporate into our morning.
Luckily for me God is quicker than I am so even if I only find one moment between opening the fridge finding the orange juice and closing it again to try and collect my peace, God can work with that. God’s workshop runs at light speed. In the time it takes me to feel the cool air on my face and the perspiration of the carton on my hand as I take a slow breath out; God has can enter the little workshop of my mind, crafting for me, with me, an armour of light to keep the peace shining.
PRAYER:
Dear God of armour
Thank you that you work with us and around us
Help us to remember to breathe when we feel our peace slipping away.
Bring us into your presence as fast as light and protect us as we go about our day
Amen
