Am I really my brother’s keeper?
Proverbs 18:24
Proverbs 18:24
One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Gen 4. 8-10
Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”[a] While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”
“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.
Today is an opportunity to meditate on two biblical passages from the Old Testament. In these passages we are being asked to reflect upon what God requires of all of us when it comes to being part of the human family.
God Our Father
I like the idea of the brotherhood of man
But I’m challenged to work it out in practice
My default position is always self preservation
Create within me a more generous heart
Give me a better understanding of those who are different from me
Help me to look for the family likeness
Help me see in the stranger a reflection your face
And give me the grace to invite others into my family story
Today I pray for the brothers and sisters who feel abandoned
For those caught up in war zones
Show me how I can become my brother’s keeper
Give me courage and insight to stand with hurting brothers and sisters
